Ronald Bailey interviews 1970 Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug, a Texas A&M
professor who is renown for his work promoting high yield farming.
High yield farming means using technology - from pesticides to
biotechnology -- to ensure a growing food supply, which is necessary
to meet the needs of a growing population and to address poverty in
the developing world.
Had the world not employed this technology - and continued to use
organic farming - Borlaug makes clear that
many people who enjoy the benefits of modern agriculture would have
starved. In fact, Bailey notes, high yield farming has pre-empted the
very mass starvation that environmentalists like Paul Ehrlich
predicted in his 1968 book, The Population Bomb.

- Synthetic Pesticides - How much are we exposed, should we be
concerned? John Stossel was accused of
fabricating findings that their tests didn't detect pesticide residues
on produce. True, they were mistaken that ABC didn't do those tests.
But studies of pesticide residues on produce consistently show that
residue levels are very low - and often are undetectable. FDA 1999.

While many Americans worry about chemical pesticides, the American
Council on Science and Health finds that chemicals pose small risks.
Greater risks result from pathogens - a key point of Stossel's program.

Safely: Avoiding Foodborne Illness"
- In "Nature's Chemicals and Synthetic Chemicals: Comparative
Toxicology," Dr. Bruce Ames and colleagues show that we are
exposed to far more natural pesticides (those which plants create to
defend themselves) at far higher levels than man-made pesticides. He
notes that in comparison to natural pesticides, our exposures
to synthetic pesticides is insignificant.

issue on foodborne illnesses and the dangers
of pathogens
It reveals that public health experts note
that manure that is not properly composted can indeed increase risks
and other studies indicate risks to our food supply. Risks are related
to pathogens, not pesticides.
